Review: Todak Seafood Restaurant (Orang Asli) @ Teluk Jawa, Masai, Johor

Todak Seafood Restaurant is arguably the most popular seafood restaurant in Johor Bahru as the food is supposedly good and affordable. Tons of Singaporeans would flock to this restaurant and it is recommended to come before 7 pm so you wouldn’t have to wait for so long.

Todak Restaurant is always very packed and you would have to stand near the table of the patrons whom you think would be leaving soon so you can book that table. Come in a huge group and give the patrons who are eating (preferably a small group like a couple) an intense stare to pressure them to leave quicker lol.

After we got a table, we ordered Teo Chew steamed fish, lala with spring onion and ginger, and the highly recommended curry prawns. We also ordered bo li seng (iceberg lettuce) vegetables which wasn’t photographed because who cares about vegetables at a seafood restaurant.

The steamed fish came in a huge plate. The fish was fresh but the broth wasn’t great as it was a tad plain. We would prefer it to be more sour.

The lala was the most underwhelming seafood for the night. According to my boyfriend, it was frozen lala instead of the fresh ones. I don’t know how about this as I am not experienced enough in tasting fresh seafood. My boyfriend said the texture was a little hard and not bouncy which indicated the lalas were frozen beforehand.

The curry was delicious and so were the buns. The prawns itself, however, were quite tasteless and my boyfriend said they were not prawns from the sea but bred in tanks. Sea prawns would have a much sweeter taste but this ones don’t. My boyfriend has had a lot of good fresh seafood so he is better than me in judging the taste seafood. He should blog instead of me lol.

If you care about the bo li shen (iceberg lettuce) vegetables, they were okay. My boyfriend doesn’t want to come here anymore as the taste doesn’t reach his expectations. The bill came up to about RM100 which was reasonable.
